Analysis of Pentaerythritol
The Intertek MSG laboratory can detect levels of pentaerythritol in analytical solutions down to levels of <40 ppb. The analysis is carried out using a LC/MS-TOF analyser. The sample is generally solvent extracted then redissolved in water. The aqueous extracts are injected on to the analyser together with the pentaerythritol calibration solutions. The pentaerythritol concentration is calculated using a multi-level peak area – concentration calibration (shown below).
Pentaerythritol is a tetra functional polyol. It is used in the synthesis of multi functional compounds such as pentaerythritol acrylate. Pentaerythritol derivatives are used in tall oil esters, paints, adhesives, varnishes, transformer oils, explosives, alkyd resins for surface coatings, stabilisers and antioxidants.
Pentaerythritol is listed in the UK Health and Safety Executive’s EH40 listing of workplace exposure limits as having a long term exposure limit (respirable dust) of 4 mgm-3. It is toxic to daphnia and other aquatic invertebrates.
